The Fool

Something new has already tugged at the door, though you do not yet know who is standing on the other side. You are afraid for good reason: the path is dark and there are no railings. Courage does not mean burying common sense. It means refusing to let fear keep the keys. The Fool stands in the moment before the first step. He has no certainty, only curiosity and the wish to see with his own eyes. A perfect plan is sometimes fear with a washed face and a tidy coat. This card does not tell you to throw yourself over a cliff, but neither will it let you build a home on the threshold. Take what you truly need. Leave the old explanations by the roadside; they weigh more than they appear to. The road does not promise to be easy. It promises to reveal itself only beneath your feet.
Reversed
Fog covers the road, and not all movement is progress. You can stand still from fear or run at full speed to escape — either way, the direction remains unchosen. The reversed Fool asks you to stop before the next step becomes another old mistake. Freedom is tempting, but perhaps you have not looked at the price tag. Or perhaps you have checked it so many times that the shop has already closed. Ask what you are trying to prove, and to whom. Is this desire truly yours, or are you wearing someone else’s expectations as your own clothes? Slowing down can be wise, provided you do not turn it into a permanent hiding place. First find out what you need, what you are prepared to give up and which consequence you are willing to carry. Then you will know whether what lies ahead is a step or a trap.
