Upright

The dark-winged woman stands in the water with a cup in each hand and the sun behind her. She is not seeking the average of two vessels, but a proportion in which the substances can meet without destroying each other. The same liquid can be medicine or poison; the dose, timing, and condition of the person carrying it make the difference. Temperance does not mean making yourself smaller or always standing halfway between extremes. There is no wise midpoint between truth and falsehood, safety and harm, or consent and coercion. This card concerns things that can genuinely be reconciled: rest and work, will and patience, your own voice and hearing another. Combine slowly, observe the effect, and adjust the measure before the whole mixture suffers. A good blend does not erase its ingredients. It gives them a form in which they do not destroy the vessel.

Reversed

The mixture will not settle in the cups of Temperance reversed. One ingredient overwhelms the others, pouring too quickly ruins the ratio, or the pendulum moves from one extreme to its opposite: collapse after work, explosion after silence, bingeing after restraint. The problem is not always the amount, but the rhythm used to control it. Do not correct one extreme by punishing yourself with another. Determine what needs less, what needs more, and what must be kept separate altogether. Make the change small enough to observe its effect before the next one. If the matter involves health, substance use, or medication, seek appropriate professional help rather than making a tarot card your dosage guide. In other matters, restore one basic measure: sleep, food, money, time, or the pause before responding. Poison does not become medicine when you change the label on the bottle.
